Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
For more than a decade, Flying Doctors of America has been bringing together physicians, dentists, nurses, chiropractors, other health professionals and non-medical support volunteers to care for people who otherwise would never receive professional medical care. We operate under the ?Mother Teresa Principle,? focusing on the poorest of the poor who live in conditions that are difficult for most Americans to imagine. Knowing that someone cares renews hope for these people who live in an otherwise hopeless situation. Flying Doctors of America was founded by Allan Gathercoal in 1990 with $700, a wing and a prayer. Today it?s an established non-profit, non-sectarian organization. In the past 12years the organization has flown more than 100 missions and provided free medical care to over 85,000 children, women and men. Among the areas served are Mexico, South and Central America, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, India, Africa, Mongolia and Thailand. Flying Doctors of America has been providing greatly needed help for over ten years now. It?s work that has been fulfilling and challenging. And yet something vital has been missing: Building long-term relationships with the people we?ve served. Those who had flown in to treat needy men, women and children for a few days have deeply desired a way to forge a meaningful, long-lasting connection with those they serve. Our goal now is to establish long-term relationships with certain medical mission sites. In particular, we are working in the Qinghai province of China and in Rwanda to provide local healthcare facilities and physicians with training and equipment for their longterm needs.
